Operation Zitadelle by David Pentland   Panzer v Ausf. D "Panthers" of SS Panther Division "Das Reich" make their debut during the initial stages of the German summer offensive for Kursk. This unit with others of the SS Panzer Korps made the deepest advances into the well-prepared Soviet lines. Complete success however, was to elude them when outrunning their supporting divisions at Prokhorovka they were forced to halt for six days.

"Fight for Kowel" Poland, March/April 1944 by David Pentland   Although in the process of regrouping after their escape from the "Cherkassy Pocket", Panthers and Panzer Grenadiers of the crack 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking" are part of the relief force hastily assembled and thrown in to free the strategically important city of Kowel in the Pripet Marshes. By April 10th the Soviet encirclement of the city was broken and "Wiking" were pulled out of the line to continue refitting.

Barkmann's Stand, by David Pentland.   Ernst Barkmann  of the Das Reich 2nd SS panzer Division holds his position near St lo, Normandy 26th July 1944. against an American Armoured breakthrough.

Night Drive to Manhay, Barkmann in the Ardennes, 24th December 1944 by David Pentland  Oberscharfuhrer Ernst Barkmann in Panther 401 accidentally found himself as the spearhead of the 2nd SS Panzer Division's night assault on the crossroads at Manhay.  Initially mistaking a lone Sherman of US 7th Armoured Division as that of his own commander, he pulled alongside the enemy tank, and only realised his mistake when he noticed it's unusual red interior lights.  In a brief close quarter fight he managed to destroy the M4 with the Panther's anti-personnel mortar (Panzergranate).  He then proceeded along the moonlit forest roads past a succession of surprised American units to Manhay and on towards Liege, having left several destroyed vehicles in his wake.  His appearance caused havoc in the US defences, culminating in a rout.

"Rommel in Normandy" France, 2nd July 1944. by David Pentland   Generalfeldmarschall Erwin Rommel, commander of Army Group B, consults with his former subordinate from North Africa, now divisional commander of the elite "Panzer Lehr", General Fritz Bayerlein and the Colonel Rudolf Gerhardt of "Panzer Regiment Lehr", over the imminent transfer of the division to confront the Americans at St. Lo.

"Debut at Caumont", Normandy 30th July, 1944 by David Pentland   The Jagdpanther was considered by many to have been the most potent anti-tank weapon of the war, combining the armoured lines of the Panther tank and awesome power of the 88mm gun. This was probably first demonstrated during the British advance through the Caumont Gap during "Operation Bluecoat" when the Jagdpanthers of Heavy Tank Battalion 654 engaged the Churchills of the 6th Guards Tank Brigade. A squadron of Churchills covering Point 226 suddenly started exploding one after another. Breaking cover from the "Bois du Homme" 2 Jagdpanthers covered by a third proceeded to pick off more of the British tanks only retreating when they came under fire. Although the 2 Jagdpanthers had to be abandoned due to track damage, they managed to destroy 14 of the Scots Guards tanks in an engagement which lasted only 2 minutes!

The Jagdpanther was probably the most effective variant o fthe Panther. A total of 382 had been built between January 1944 and March 1945.  Armed with the 8.8mm FLak Gun which had already proved itself as a devastating efficiency as a tank destroyer.  But until the panther was built no tank chassis was strong and reliable enough to carry such a formidable gun. The Jagdpanther was built by Muhlenbau und Industrie AG in their Brunwick factory. It was crewed by 5 men and carried 60 shells. it  had a range of 100 miles and a speed of 30MPH. it could engage the enemy vehicles at a range of 2,700 yards. (2,469metres.)

The Jagdpanthers was  organised into Troops of heavy anti0tank battalions consisting of 14 vehicles  per company and three companies to the battalion.  each Company was split into three platoons of four tanks and two kept as company HQ

Ivan Berryman - Battle of Britain Art

Artist Ivan Berryman has been producing many pencil drawings depicting scenes from the Battle of Britain. Each of these is signed by one of the pilots who was actually present at the battle, and is often inspired by the events they took part in themselves. Special signed print editions have also been created from existing full colour print editions, with some featuring multiple pilot signatures. You can find all of Ivan's Battle of Britain artwork on his website - www.ivanberryman.com, or see a full list of pencil drawings - updated regularly, in our dedicated section of pencil drawings.

When you go to a product page for an item in our shop, click on the names of the pilots where they are linked in the text for an item to see a profile page for that pilot. Often we include photos of signing sessions along with details of their flying career, and a full list of all items signed by the pilot.

Pilot Signed Battle of Britain Prints and Original Pencil Drawings

Commemorating the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain

We are busy building up a portfolio of many many original pencil drawings which depict events from the Battle of Britain, the famous air battle won by 'the Few' in the summer of 1940. The British and Commonwealth pilots defended the air above Britain and the surrounding seaways from the might of the German Luftwaffe. Greatly outnumbered, the bravery of these young pilots saved the country from invasion, and let Britain survive to go on to defeat Germany. Without that first crucial victory, the outcome of the war could have been so very different. We have been busy arranging signing sessions with the few pilots who fought in that great battle who remain with us to this day. Our newly commissioned pencil drawings are often based on the descriptions of the battle by these great men, and are authenticated by their signatures. We have also had several editions of existing prints signed in full, or have signatures added to parts of existing editions. We have also incoporated signatures of some of the German pilots who also took part in the battle, some of whom went on to become top scoring aces of the war. See our Original Pencil Drawings Section - particularly the section of artists David Pentland and Ivan Berryman. Also, see our New Signature Editions section to see all of our newly signed editions.
